Alumnae weekend

Alumnae weekend 2019

Every autumn, we look forward to welcoming back our alumnae to College for an exciting weekend. Our alumnae weekend coincides with the University’s Alumni Festival. You can find out more information about the wider festival from June onwards.

All alumnae are invited to join this annual reunion dinner, especially those who matriculated in 1959, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2009. Further events will take place for specific year groups over this weekend - year representatives will be in touch.

Saturday 28 September

Alumnae Weekend Lecture - Women Collaborating with Men for Inclusive Workplace Cultures, 11.00am

Buckingham House Lecture Theatre

Book here

Join us for an interesting morning of discussion about men and women in the workplace, led by Dr Jill Armstrong, Bye Fellow at Murray Edwards College, and featuring Jason Ghaboos, Deputy Director at the Home Office. The aim of the session is to explore why it’s important for men to partner women to create more gender inclusive workplace cultures and what stands in men’s way. Jill and Jason will suggest ways individuals can act to deliver everyday gender inclusion and ways organisations can support this, drawing on case studies.

Alumnae Weekend Lecture - NOT a Convent: Building a College for Women, 12.00pm

Buckingham House Lecture Theatre

Book here

On the basis of documents and drawings from the College archives, this lecture, given by alumna Professor Dr Christina Strunck (New Hall, 1991) Professor of History of Art at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, will reconstruct the design process and analyse the features in the architecture that endorse a specific vision of women’s education.

Alumnae Weekend Lecture – Dame Polly Courtice (1976), 4.00pm

Buckingham House Lecture Theatre

Book here

We will be given a presentation by Dame Polly Courtice (1976), Director of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), who will draw on her tremendous experience to provide a brief summary of where we are with climate change, and then explore the impact and role that businesses can play, and what we should expect of them, in either helping or hindering the response.

Alumnae Dinner and Drinks Reception, 6.00pm

Fellows’ Drawing Room and the Dome

Book here

The ticket price is £50 and includes the drinks reception and three course meal with wine.

Sunday 29 September

Art and Garden Tour, 11.00am

Meet at Rosemary Murray Library

Book here

The tour will start with tea in the Rosemary Murray Library with an introduction to the architecture of the College. We will then split in to two groups, one starting with a tour introducing you to the New Hall Art Collection, the largest collection of works by women in Europe, the other exploring our gardens, the original grounds of The Orchard, a large house bequeathed by Norah Barlow and Ruth Rees Thomas, granddaughters of Charles Darwin and distinguished plantswomen. After 45 minutes, the groups will swap tours so that attendees get the full experience of the art and gardens of Murray Edwards College.
