Psyche Awake, Eros Asleep I
In this retelling of the classical Greek myth, the wide-awake figure of Psyche is full of curiosity, hands contorted in anticipation of her next move. She occupies the same space as Eros, delineated only by scratchy outlines. Female agency and the merging of originally distinct figures are central to Jacqueline Morreau’s re-workings of classical myths. The depiction of psychological complexity and intent offers an alternative to the ancient myth that seeks to punish Psyche for her desire for knowledge, encouraging us to draw parallels with contemporary society.
