Havasu Memory

This work depicts the Havasu region of northern Arizona, part of the Grand Canyon homeland of the Havasupai people. The left panel shows a rocky landscape, whilst the right panel resembles stone and copper—a material of cultural and spiritual significance in many Indigenous communities. Drawing on the tradition of American landscape painting and acknowledging its colonial history, WalkingStick merges Indigenous histories with modern artistic forms to tell a story of place, memory, and reverence for the land.
