Linguistics and Modern Languages
The Linguistics and Modern Languages Tripos is a four-year undergraduate degree combining Linguistics (the scientific study of language as a core aspect of human cognition) with the study of a modern language, exploring its social context, history and culture.
LML students study one main language, which may be continued from school or taken from scratch (except French, which must be continued from school).
You can choose to study:
- French and Linguistics (if you’re taking it at A level or IB Higher Level)
- German and Linguistics
- Italian and Linguistics
- Portuguese and Linguistics
- Russian and Linguistics
- Spanish and Linguistics
Applicants without an A Level or equivalent qualification in a foreign language are encouraged to apply and are given full consideration.
From the outset of the LML course, language learning is integrated with cultural, literary and historical study. During the first two years, students build strong language skills before spending their third year abroad, studying or working in a foreign country, and immersing themselves fully in their chosen language and its culture.
Alongside learning a language, you will also learn about language itself. Linguistics is the systematic study of human language, drawing on disciplines such as philosophy, physics, computer science, psychology and neuroscience. Areas of study will range from language as a general idea to the analysis of individual languages and language families.
The interdisciplinary nature of the Linguistics and Modern Languages course means students have a lot of freedom to follow their own curiosity about how these areas intersect.
