Dame Barbara Stocking, who has been President at Murray Edwards College since July 2013, will retire from her role at the end of the 2020/21 academic year.

According to College statutes, the President must retire from office at the end of the September following their 70th birthday. Since Dame Barbara will be turning 70 in 2021, it is time for the College to seek and elect a new President.

The College is currently in the process of inviting applications from candidates to take up the role of President in September 2021. The advertisement can be found on our website

“Dame Barbara’s relationship with the College spans over 50 years: she first joined the College as an undergraduate in 1969 and was made an Honorary Fellow in 2010 before taking up the post of President in 2013. While her tenure as Head of House is soon to come to an end, we know that Barbara will remain as committed as ever to the College community throughout the next 12 months and beyond.

Next year, there will be many opportunities for alumnae, Fellows, students, staff and friends to celebrate Barbara’s achievements and thank her for all that she has done – and continues to do – for the benefit of Murray Edwards College. For now, it is enough to say that we are deeply grateful for her continued leadership, especially during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
