Burns Night Formal Hall
Students and Fellows enjoyed the annual Burns Night Super Hall on 24 January 2017. Guests gathered in the Fellows Drawing Room for a sherry and soft drinks reception before heading up to the Dome Dining Hall. Once seated, guests said the 'Selkirk Grace' led by Fellow David Adamson.
Sous chef Graham Hardy brought forth the haggis, accompanied by bagpipe music from the Cambridge Piper. Fellow David Adamson addressed the haggis with the traditional Robert Burns poem 'Address to a Haggis'. There was confusion and subsequent amusement for some students and Fellows, who found it hard to follow the poems 10 verses in Scots’ dialect;
“Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o’ the puddin’-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe or thairm: Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang’s my arm.”
Guests also enjoyed whisky, beef stovies with oat dumplings and cabbage, followed by raspberry cranachan for dessert.
The evening was rounded off with a ceilidh in the Long Room accompanied by whisky, cheese and coffee.
