Facilities

Murray Edwards has a squash court and netball/tennis courts available for College members on-site. There is also lots of equipment available for anyone in College to use in the Sports Cupboard, including rounders kits, bibs, cones, balls, squash rackets, tennis rackets and more.

Gym

Murray Edwards also has an on-site gym. The gym is available for use every day from 06:00 to 23:00. Gym membership fees are £18 per term or £52.00 a year.

The gym is an unsupervised facility made available by the College for the use of students, Fellows, staff, and alumnae. The gym is self-funded by its membership fees and the equipment is serviced, maintained, repaired, or replaced from these fees. The equipment includes a squat rack, kettle bells, cross trainers, bikes, a step master, a rowing machine, and treadmills. There is also an area for free weights, yoga, and boxing.

Sports Societies

Murray Edwards has a range of different teams and clubs for people of all interests and abilities. Sports societies are usually a mix of undergraduates and postgraduates and you are welcome to join whatever you feel like doing. Throughout the year there are many intercollegiate tournaments. College sport tends to be less of a time commitment than University sports teams.

For all enquiries, please contact the JCR Sports Officer.

Athletics

Everyone is welcomed, we aren’t serious! We compete in the intercollegiate Cuppers competition each year and were last years’ winners.

Badminton

Badminton Club welcomes all players, whether you simply need a break from work, want to learn a new sport or are interested in competing for the College. Our main session takes place on Saturday afternoons/evenings (depending on the time of year), with additional training on Sunday afternoons.

Basketball

We are a very relaxed club with training once a week and matches on some Saturday mornings in Michaelmas and Lent term. We’re always keen for more people to take up basketball, even if you’ve never tried it before!

Climbing

We meet up casually on a weekly basis to go climbing at Kelsey Kerridge and take part in Climbing Cuppers (intercollegiate competitions). No experience is necessary: if you’re a beginner we’ll show you the ropes! Join our Facebook group to keep up to date with our meets.

Football

We train once a week on the pitches next door at St Edmunds College and league matches are usually on Saturday afternoons.

Hockey

We play matches most Sundays against other Colleges and the team is open to all abilities. We have a lot of fun and do pretty well!

Lacrosse Club (combined with Peterhouse and Fitzwilliam College)

Our mixed lacrosse team is joint with Peterhouse and Fitzwilliam Colleges. We play very relaxed matches around once a week (usually on Sundays), all abilities are welcome!

Murray Edwards Rounders Massive (MERM)

MERM is a new rounders club that meets weekly on Saturday afternoons for a fun, relaxed rounders session. Experience is not necessary, enthusiasm is.

Rowing

Boat Club Contact: boatclub-captain@murrayedwards.cam.ac.uk

Rowing is a great way to get to know people in College and show some Medwards pride. Early outings may not sound appealing but one of the most beautiful sites to behold in Cambridge is to see the morning mist roll across Midsummer Common as you head out into the countryside. We welcome any standard and have many novice teams for beginners!

The Neptunes is the Boat Club newsletter.

Further information about rowing for Murray Edwards can be found on the Murray Edwards College Boat Club website.

Rugby Club (combined with Sidney Sussex and Girton)

Want to play a sport that is low commitment, gets you in great physical shape and gives you street cred like none other? Women’s rugby is a fantastically fun sport, with an inclusive team spirit welcoming everyone to play, whether you have played before, or are a total beginner.

Running

We are a friendly, chilled running club which is open to all standards. We do group runs of varying lengths around Cambridge.

Squash

We are a new club which is making the most of Medwards’ very own squash court. We meet informally and no experience is necessary. Plus, it is always warm as it is played indoors (big perk!)

Swimming

We are a super relaxed and friendly team and all come together for the annual Swimming Cuppers (intercollegiate competition). We had a particularly impressive performance this year, qualifying for three of the final events and putting in a strong performance in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay.

Tennis

The Medwards tennis club is a friendly and inclusive group for all standards, with the opportunity to play games both within College and with other Colleges.

Ultimate Frisbee Club (combined with Churchill)

Ultimate is a mixed team sport that welcomes people of all abilities.  A lot of people who join have never properly thrown a frisbee before. It's great fun and friendly, and this year Churchill is joining with Murray Edwards for the first time!
