Celebrating success at BUCS Gymnastics Championships

Sophie Bhatt

On Saturday 31 January, this year’s Women’s British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Gymnastics competition took place at the Hinckley Gymnastics Club in Leicester. The national BUCS Gymnastics competition is an annual event where all British universities and colleges are invited to compete.

College is extremely proud to share that Sophie Bhatt, our very own JCR Sports Officer, medaled, winning a bronze on vault. She was also 5th overall out of around 100 gymnasts in the category - 5th in the nation!

Sophie has been doing gymnastics since she was about 8 and has also coached for 4 years or so.

Re-engaging with the sport when she came to Cambridge, Sophie says:

“I fell in love with the sport very quickly and progressed to the squad, training about 25-30 hours a week.

It is truly an addictive sport with so much mental strength required, a lot of overcoming fears and resilience, as well as of course the physical aspect as gymnastics has such a unique mix of elegance, artistry, strength and precision. I love the sense of achievement gained in overcoming fear and perfecting such difficult skills and routines.

The university gymnastics team is super easy to get involved with, they have 2 free trial sessions anyone can go to, and the sessions are coached, so suitable for complete beginners. It is also a really friendly bunch of people and a great way to make incredible friendships.

We do also have some exceptionally high-level gymnasts who have competed at British championships and internationally, so it really caters to all levels!”
