She Talks Science - brilliant, eye-opening, encouraging and inspiring

The student conference is an introduction to studying STEM at Cambridge

She Talks Science

On 7 February, an excited cohort of year 12 students from schools across the country spent the day at Murray Edwards to learn about studying STEM subjects at the University of Cambridge and the reality of life in a college. The students enjoyed presentations from academic staff as well as their choice of subject taster sessions. Current and former students also spent time  answering questions about STEM subjects and the student experience at Cambridge before our very own Director of Admissions, Dr Andrew Bond, did a fantastic job of demystifying the often daunting admissions process.

In recent years Murray Edwards College has seen some very positive signs in its admissions figures - the number of women applying to study STEM subjects has increased, year on year, alongside exceptionally high demand from sixth formers for places on outreach events and activities. It’s essential that the College, and the schools we collaborate with, continue to ignite interest and provide support and encouragement for young women in STEM, giving them as many opportunities to succeed as we can.

Students said:

“This has been the most useful outreach event to have attended – I’ve made so many great new friends and learnt so much.”

“Before attending I was unsure whether Cambridge was for me, but this conference really opened my eyes to the reality.”

“It was a brilliant day and gave an insight to the life at the College as well as how studying STEM at Cambridge really is.”

“Today has been a brilliant introduction into studying STEM at Cambridge and has definitely encouraged me to consider Medwards.”

“An inspiring and motivating opportunity for women in STEM.”

College would like to thank the Isaac Newton Trust Fund, which generously provided student travel bursaries to support the event.
