Colours and Captains Dinner 2026
Embracing Cambridge Tradition
On Friday 8 May, Medwards students celebrated their inaugural Colours and Captains Formal Dinner - an event marking the beginning of what promises to become a proud College tradition in true Cambridge style.
The driving force behind the event was Sophie Bhatt, Medwards JCR Sports Officer, who did a phenomenal job organising the dinner. An outstanding athlete herself, Sophie recently came first in the Varsity Gymnastics competition and won a bronze medal at the BUCS Gymnastics Championships 2025–26.
Victoria Harvey, Senior Tutor, said:
“I hope this will be a long standing College tradition - there are so many incredible sports people here with so much to celebrate. I am so very grateful to be invited, to be part of this, and to be surrounded by such high achievers. Sport has such a positive impact on wellbeing, mental health and academic performance.”
Sports Personality of The Year 2026
In one of the event highlights, Aimi Weightman was awarded Sports Personality of The Year 2026 for her continued success in cross country. Having won Cambridge's Cross Country Cuppers, she was selected for the Blues team in Varsity. Here she ran a second place finish in an extremely competitive race.
She later competed at the BUCS Cross Country Championships and, following an outstanding performance, was selected to represent Great Britain at the World University Cross Country Championships, where she finished eighth in the world. She was also named as a reserve for the European Cross Country Championships this winter.
Aimi said:
"I'm honoured to be named our first sports personality of the year! I have very much enjoyed training and competing this year and it's been great to be able to represent Murray Edwards in doing so. Thank you to the college for all the continual support!"
