Important Notice: Due to the current public health situation, all In Person congregations this academic year have been postponed. The Praelector will circulate information to those affected in due course and will update the website with new dates once they have been made available by the University.
Students or alumnae who are eligible to receive their degrees may do so at Congregations of the Regent House held on Saturdays at regular intervals throughout the year. The College Praelector is responsible for presenting students at Congregations when they receive their degrees.
The Congregation ceremony is one of the oldest traditions in the University. The conferment of each degree is still an act of the whole University, approved by the Grace of the Regent House, that is by a resolution of the governing body. Graduands are presented one by one to the Vice-Chancellor of the University or a deputy, in the presence of the Proctors who are the elected representatives of the Regent House. Although Congregations are held throughout the year, the June Congregations are set aside for what is called General Admission to Degrees, at which most undergraduates proceed to their first degrees at the end of their final term.
Bookings must be made before noon 10 days before the Congregation date.
Any member of Murray Edwards who has fulfilled the appropriate examination and residence requirements may proceed to their degree at Congregation. The College will automatically contact those students whom it expects to present for their 'first' degrees at General Admission in the Lent Term. The Board of Graduate Studies informs graduate students when they have been approved for their degrees and asks them to contact the College to make the necessary arrangements to have their degrees conferred at Congregation.
The College will not put forward anyone for graduation in person who has not settled their College and University bills.
If you wish to put your name forward to receive your degree at any Congregation except MA and General Admission you will need to complete the College's online Graduation form. Only General Admission is bookable via CamSIS. Your application will only be processed once details have been checked with the University and any balance owing to the College has been paid.
Each Congregation generally follows the same pattern although the precise timing of events will not be available until one week before the Congregation. Final times and other details will be sent by email as soon as they become available.
If you are unable to attend in person, you may wish to receive your degree in absence. If that's the case, please complete the online Graduation form. Your certificate will be posted to you approximately one week after the Congregation date.
Please contact the Graduate Administrator if you have any queries.
You may sign up for three Senate House tickets to give to family and friends (you do not need one for yourself). Due to the restricted space at the Senate House please only request the number of tickets you actually require.
Tickets will normally be available for collection from the Porters' Lodge on the day itself. Graduands and their guests are invited to join the Praelector for lunch before the Congregation. There is no maximum number of guests you may bring to lunch, (there is a charge per guest, but no charge for graduands). Please confirm the charge with the Graduate Administrator.
On the day of the Congregation, graduands and their guests are invited to meet in the Fellows' Drawing Room for drinks at about 12.45pm. Graduands should arrive in the correct academic robes. Lunch follows in the Fellows' Dining Room for those who have indicated they wish to attend. After lunch, there will be a compulsory short rehearsal before the Praelector accompanies the graduands to the Senate House. Any graduands not attending lunch will be expected to arrive at Murray Edwards in time for the rehearsal.
Please note: the March Congregation is a much larger event as this is when many eligible alumnae return to receive their MA degrees. The day is organised differently and any non-MA graduands wishing to attend this Congregation should contact the Graduate Administrator for further information before completing their form.
Original degree certificates are issued without charge to all those proceeding to degrees. If proceeding in absence, the certificate will be sent to you by post. Any extra copies must be ordered from the University's Student Registry office.
All graduands receive a formal University transcript free of charge after graduation. They will be sent out from the College, so please ensure that you have completed your First Destination address in CamSIS. Again, extra copies of transcripts must be ordered from the Student Registry.

During the course of the graduation ceremony, an individual photograph is taken of each graduand at the moment the degree is conferred. Following the ceremony, while you rejoin family and friends on the lawns of the Senate House, photographers are available to take individual or group portraits. There is no need to make arrangements in advance as this is all organised on the day.
