Jeannie Baxter-Reid: MPhil in Education 2004-2005My name is Jeannie Baxter-Reid. I am a primary school teacher with over 20 years classroom experience, mother and now the proud recipient of a Cambridge MPhil in Education. Studying overseas for my Masters had always been a goal of mine, studying it at Cambridge was more a dream. New Hall has been the keystone to my success in achieving that dream. In August 2004, just five months after the birth of my son Thomas, my school extended my maternity leave by a year and the slenderest of opportunities opened. A crazy month ensued of applications and offers and in the end I was accepted by New Hall. From the time I arrived in Cambridge until I left (and each time that I have returned) New Hall has been the centre of both my and my family's life. The MCR provided immediate, and now long term, friendships on top of the post formal hall gatherings, formal hall swaps and social activities throughout the year. My husband and young son were accepted into the wider New Hall family and concessions, championed by the MCR, were made allowing both of them to attend the weekly formal halls. The academic support, both financially and intellectually, from New Hall is without reproach but for me it is the sense of community and belonging that is the greatest benefit that the college bestows. |
