Why give to the College?

New Hall was founded in borrowed buildings with just one shilling in 1954, since then generations of gifted women from all backgrounds have experienced the unique educational environment that the College provides. One of these women, Ros Edwards (née Smith, 1981) saw such value in this inspirational educational institution that she, along with her husband, gave the largest ever personal donation to a Cambridge college, finally putting us on a secure financial footing. 

However, the College would not be where it is today without the multitude of smaller, but no less generous, gifts from alumnae and friends throughout the College's history. Donations of any size truly do make a difference to our students and Fellows. They also help us to demonstrate to other potential funders that our alumnae are supporting the College in its core mission to educate talented women regardless of their background. It is this mission, as well as the College’s proud history and values, which inspired Ros and Steve Edwards to give, and we hope that you too will be inspired to donate to ensure that other gifted women can experience all that Cambridge has to offer.

Why give to education:

“I think that we should use our hard-earned cash to support education and educational excellence.... Education is central to the economic, political, medical, philosophical and spiritual health of the world. It provides everything from the medical advances and technology that saves lives, to the framework for democracy and the protection of human rights. And educated people are the catalysts for making things better. They are the scientists, the doctors, the linguists, the directors of Oxfam who go out and make things better.... I believe that supporting education and educational excellence is the best and most wide reaching contribution we can make with our charitable giving.”
