"I received a grant for the summer of 2006 towards accommodation in Cambridge for 8 weeks. It allowed me to work in the High Resolution Electron Microscopy group of the Materials Science department and try out proper research for the first time. It was an amazing opportunity to contribute something and see first hand what academia is like outside the strictures of undergraduate courses."
Haibo E (2004)
"Cambridge is just the sort of place I've always wanted to be - at the cutting-edge of world academia. I am grateful beyond words for all the financial help I have received from the University and from the Paula Browne Scholarship at New Hall, which has turned studying here from a dream into a reality."
Nazneen Molu (2007)
"As a student, the Rosemary Murray Fund allowed me to volunteer with Campus Children's Holidays, a charity, run entirely by Cambridge students, to provide breaks for children from Liverpool who wouldn't otherwise get a holiday. Initially, I signed up to spend two weeks as a helper on a residential project, and the financial assistance from New Hall meant I could finish my dull audio typing job a few weeks early. But I became more involved over time and Campus became the most important thing I did at Cambridge. I gained the confidence to take on a challenge and see it through and the insight that young people should be valued and believed in. Call it serendipity, but, without this opportunity to explore, I am pretty certain that I would have missed out on something that has become a great influence in my life."
Rachel Nichols (2003)
"New Hall gave me a sense of shared experience and values - of culture, knowledge and understanding beyond the immediate necessities. The teaching environment confirmed that questioning everything was not just OK, but desirable, and convinced me that work and application can be fun as well as rewarding - a principle I applied throughout my career."
Jenny Bacon (1964, Honorary Fellow), former Director-General, Health and Safety Executive, now retired
"The bursary provision from the College and the Newton Trust has just been great, as it means that I can concentrate on my studies without worrying about lack of funds! Importantly, too, the in-house teaching I received for History in my first year made settling into Cambridge much easier; the one-to-one teaching you receive really helps in building your confidence."
Jess Snow (2005)
... and to our Fellows
"I am an economist with a general interest in food security and in famines in Africa. My research is on Malawi where I travel regularly to conduct micro-level case studies in rural areas."
Zoltan Tiba, Former Research Fellow in African Studies
"I joined Murray Edwards College in October 2008 to pursue a three-year research project on migration between Alsace and Algeria in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I am particularly interested in settler culture in the colonies and the ways in which the idea of Empire took root on a local level in France, themes which have importance for understanding issues of inclusion and exclusion, citizenship and immigration in Europe today."
Alison Carrol, Former Research Fellow in History
Murray Edwards College is a Registered Charity (No. 1137530).
