Orchard Court refurbishment
When it was designed in the 1960s, Orchard Court (which some alumnae may also know as Old Block) was pioneering in design, inventive and architecturally daring. Sadly, like all buildings, over time it has lost that initial sparkle, and is now in desperate need of extensive refurbishment. The standard of facilities and accommodation for the 120 students and Fellows who live and work there will be vastly improved, whilst respecting the Grade II* listed status of this iconic and familiar building for future generations of students.
Due to the extent of the work required the total cost of this project will be £5.3 million excluding furnishings. However, the impact of the completed building on the lives of our students and Fellows will transform the experience of living and working in Orchard Court.
Creating a community
Living in College accommodation enables our students to build lasting friendships, and provides some of the most rewarding and enriching memories of the unique College experience. By restoring and modernising Orchard Court, we can continue to offer our students a diverse social community and the opportunity to make friends for life, as well as a stimulating academic environment.
Attracting the best students and Fellows
We believe that education has the power to transform both individuals and society. The collegiate system is inherently competitive and it is vital that we continue to attract the best students and Fellows. High quality accommodation is always in demand, and for many is an influencing factor in deciding where to apply. By improving and regenerating Orchard Court, we will create a modern, appealing environment for teaching and research, enabling us to continue to compete within the University.
Memories that last a lifetime
Through this extensive programme of restoration and sympathetic modernisation, we aim to improve Orchard Court and its facilities, whilst preserving its history. For years to come students will have the opportunity to live in the same rooms, see the same views and share the same great experiences as our alumnae did during their time at College. From the split-level rooms to communal kitchens, students will always be able to look back fondly on evocative memories of living in Orchard Court.
This ambitious programme of regeneration will include:
- 120 study bedrooms refurbished with updated facilities, including new furniture, carpets, lighting and book shelves
- 14 kitchens fully refitted to provide important communal areas
- 60 shower rooms modernised and enhanced to an improved ratio of 1 shower room to every 2 bedrooms
- Complete renovation of the building's heating, electrics, lighting, flooring and computer services
- Repairs to external concrete and brickwork, which are urgently needed to seal leaks
- Improved provision of fire safety systems, including an external staircase
- Strengthening the unique split-level staircases and adding banisters.
