New Hall Art Collection

The College has an outstanding collection of works by women artists, the largest and most significant of its kind in Europe. Adding colour and vibrancy to the striking architecture, the Art Collection is vital in enhancing the environment in which our students and Fellows live and work.

The Collection has been created largely through the exceptional generosity of the artists themselves and is, in a similar way to the College itself, built on benefaction. The New Hall Art Collection includes works by Maggi Hambling, Barbara Hepworth, Paula Rego and Judy Chicago, among others. A full list of artists is available on the Art Collection website.

Whilst the College does not purchase works of art, it does have a responsibility to manage, catalogue and maintain the Art Collection. The Barlow Art Fund (named after a particularly generous donation from the Barlow family) was set up to cover these costs. We have raised £184,000 to date, towards a target of £250,000.

Our other target is to endow a Curatorship for the Collection, with an endowment of £850,000. This will ensure that the overall quality of the Collection is maintained and proper access and visibility of it is offered to the public through loans, exhibitions, visits, press coverage and an up-to-date website. The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded the College £99,900 to fund a Curator and associated costs for three years from 2008. We now need to raise £27,000 over the next three years to supplement the Heritage Lottery Fund grant and fund this project in its entirety, as well as seek funding to endow the post in perpetuity.

The Art Collection is a special and unique feature of the College. It creates an inspiring environment that stimulates creativity and fosters imagination. Many alumnae tell us how much more pleasant the College was for them thanks to the Art Collection and how it has made the College buildings feel more like home.
