The Dome

Rising above the other College buildings, the Dome is Murray Edwards' signature building. Grade II* listed, it was designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and was fully refurbished in 2002. The Dome houses the Dining Hall and is the primary display area for the College's renowned New Hall Art Collection. When it was constructed The Guardian wrote:

There has been nothing like this in Cambridge since Sir Christopher Wren did a spell there. New Hall is classical architecture, stylish in the grand manner; the manner of the slide rule and the tower crane, of the 4½ ton vault, cast in London, and swung smoothly into place above the tree tops to a tolerance of a quarter of an inch.

The Dome is the College's main dining hall and is an exceptionally light, open and spacious triumph of modern architecture. It plays host to a College cafeteria service at lunchtime and early evening, and to more formal waiter-served, three-course dinners (Formal Halls) on Tuesdays and some Fridays during Term. It is an excellent venue for both student and conference dining, whether informally or formally.
