Network connections
All rooms on the main College site have a connection to the College ethernet that can be used to access your homespace on the PWF, printers, e-mail, web and other facilities offered within the University and elsewhere on the Internet.
You should be aware that you are responsible for your connection and you will need to take care that you follow the guidelines which are provided for you. Please ensure that you have read and understand the Terms and Conditions of Network Use, Rules for Use of Academic Computing Facilities at Murray Edwards College and Rules for WWW Information Providers at Murray Edwards College.
If you wish to use the connection in your room, the stages involved are as follows:
- Make a note of the operating system on your computer and then go to the Computer Office (B2) and collect a computer connection pack
- If your computer does not have an ethernet card you will need to purchase one yourself. This should have a 10/100/1000-base T connection (also known as UTP or RJ-45). If you need advice, please contact the Computer Office.
- Complete the instructions in the pack and then plug your computer into the network socket in your room
- Carefully follow the on-screen instructions to register your computer and obtain an IP address
- On completion of the instructions, reboot your computer; you should now be able to use the network from your room
If, after following all of the instructions, you find you need some help with your network connection, please contact the Computer Office.
