Old Boy

Park Chan-Wook's Oldboy (2003), the second film in his Vengeance Trilogy, won the 2004 Grand Prize at Cannes and introduced an entire generation of Western viewers to the world of South Korean cinema. At once stylistically playful and shockingly brutal, Oldboy distils material from diverse traditions of revenge tragedy into a film of compelling and disturbing power. As a major work of modern revenge tragedy, this film may be of particular interest to undergraduate English students working on the Part II Tragedy paper.
