Dr W. Owen Saxton
Fellow and College Lecturer in Physics; Director of Studies in Physics and Natural Sciences (Physical) Part IA Murray Edwards College Telephone: 01223 762270 (College) 334566 (Dept) ProfileOwen Saxton is a physicist working on electron microscopy of a wide range of materials, developing new ways of observing structures at atomic resolution (e.g. catalysts) through recovering protein structures at ~1nm resolution from extremely noisy images of distorted crystals, to determining electric and magnetic field distributions in recording media. The work has required the solution of numerous technical problems, including the automatic measurement of electron lens aberrations - and the development of a comprehensive digital image processing system Semper, widely used as a tool in this and other fields. He won the 1966 Ernst Ruska Prize, awarded every four years for the greatest contribution to electron microscopy in Europe. He has taught Physics at Murray Edwards College since 1975 - as a Fellow since 1983, and as Director of Studies since 1990. He was also the College's Admissions Tutor for two years and its Senior Tutor for seven; a Tutor for fifteen years, and the Praelector for as long. He will be one of the University Proctors 2012-13. More information is available at a Departmental page, and a Personal page.
