Honouring the College's history in its Charter
Following the recent consultation, the Governing Body has now confirmed that the College's formal name will be 'The President and Fellows of Murray Edwards College, founded as New Hall, in the University of Cambridge', while it will be commonly known as 'Murray Edwards College'. This was the preferred option for 70% of the 681 alumnae who took part in a consultation on three alternative names. The College will now apply to the University of Cambridge and the Privy Council to change its Charter and Statutes, with the final approval expected in about Spring 2011.
A message for alumnae from Dr Jennifer Barnes, the College's President:
"We are immensely grateful to all the alumnae who gave of their time to send us their thoughtful views. Our formal name will appear on our letterhead, website, College seal and cornerstone on Buckingham Road. We continue to honour and remember our heritage as New Hall, and I thank all those alumnae who have given us ideas on how this might be achieved. I look forward to continuing these conversations with our alumnae in the future."
