Dr Robin Hammond (1914 - 2010)
It is with great sadness that the College announces the death of founding Fellow, Dr Robin Hammond, on 23rd December 2010.
Robin Hammond was appointed College Lecturer in English at New Hall in March 1954 and, along with Dame Rosemary Murray, was one of the two senior members of the College at its foundation. She directed studies in Arts subjects, and she and Dame Rosemary worked as a team to manage the College and its students. After New Hall moved to Huntingdon Road, Dr Hammond was Tutor and then Senior Tutor before her retirement in 1974.
As well as her key contribution to the establishment of the College, Robin was instrumental in setting its tone and ethos. Her kindness and her wisdom are remembered by many. The College's Hammond House was named in her honour, and the Robin Hammond Prize in English, established by alumnae through the New Hall Society in 2009, is awarded annually.
